In essence, “This Dreamer” is a boy-meets-girl romantic musical comedy. It probably qualifies as a “rock musical.”
But it’s not typical musical theatre, rom-com, rock musical, or otherwise. It’s not that the show is trying to be different…it just turned out that way.
It’s a full-length show (about two hours) but there are only four cast members so don’t expect any big production numbers. (That’s right…there’s no chorus!) But do expect some dancing.
The show is centered around a band and they play the music live on stage. Not just parts of the music like in “Chicago” but all of the music. There are moments in the show when it’s almost like being at a concert. But it’s not a concert.
The songs in the show tell most of the story, but not in place of dialog or soliloquies. They just flow as part of the plot.
While it has some underlying (sometimes subtle) themes, “This Dreamer” ultimately is pure entertainment. And fun! It will leave the audience smiling at the end, with a song (or two) running through their heads.
