Brainium emerged in the 1980s out of the ashes of a couple of less enduring bands. They are perhaps best described by a lyric from one of their songs:
We’re two guys in disguise as a pseudo-intellectual music machine.
“Our Kind of Town”
The “two guys” are:
- Thom Ciezki: Guitars, backing vocals.
- Gary Schmid: Keyboards, programming, lead vocals.
Brainium was always about having fun playing music. They were a (slowly) rising star on the local live music scene until the infamous “incident” at Broadway Joe’s. Don’t ask. (Hint: spilling water into electrical equipment tends to not end well.)
Their passion for creating and recording original music, usually using rudimentary (even by 1980s standards) equipment, sustained them through the years, until a relocation temporarily ended their collaborative endeavors (and use of big words)
The band started playing together again in 2016, working on the score for the musical that is now “This Dreamer.” Thom continues to play in other local bands but both he and (especially) Gary share a healthy aversion to putting cups of water on speakers whilst playing.
